How to move bookmarks to another device or browser

Get your bookmarks from your PC to your phone, or from one browser to another, without retyping a single address.

Pick the right method

How you move bookmarks depends on where they are now and where they need to go:

  • Same browser on both devices (for example Chrome on your PC and Chrome on your phone): turn on sync with the browser's account. This is the easiest option and keeps both sides updated.
  • A different browser on the same computer (for example Chrome to Firefox): export an HTML bookmark file and import it.
  • Different browsers on different devices (for example Chrome on Windows to Safari on iPhone): phones can't import bookmark files, so you need either an intermediate step or a browser-independent service.

Sync bookmarks with your browser account

Chrome (PC ↔ Android or iPhone)

  1. On your PC, click your profile icon at the top right of Chrome and sign in with your Google account. Turn on sync if you're asked.
  2. Check that Bookmarks is turned on in the sync settings (Settings → You and Google).
  3. On your phone, open Chrome → Settings, sign in with the same Google account and keep bookmarks syncing.

After a few minutes your PC bookmarks appear in the phone's bookmark list, and bookmarks saved on the phone show up under Mobile bookmarks on the PC.

Edge, Safari and Firefox

  • Edge: sign in with the same Microsoft account on each device and turn on Favorites in the sync settings.
  • Safari: on iPhone, iPad and Mac, turn on Safari in the iCloud settings for your Apple Account.
  • Firefox: sign in with a Mozilla account on each device and choose to sync bookmarks.

Export and import an HTML bookmark file

Every desktop browser can save bookmarks as an HTML file and read that file back. This is the standard way to switch browsers.

Export

  • Chrome: bookmark manager (Ctrl + Shift + O) → ⋮ → Export bookmarks.
  • Edge: favorites (Ctrl + Shift + O) → ··· → Export favorites.
  • Firefox: Library (Ctrl + Shift + O) → Import and Backup → Export Bookmarks to HTML.
  • Safari (Mac): File → Export → Bookmarks.

Import

  • Chrome: ⋮ → Bookmarks and lists → Import bookmarks and settings → Bookmarks HTML File. Imported bookmarks may land in a folder named “Imported”.
  • Edge: favorites → ··· → Import favorites.
  • Firefox: Library → Import and Backup → Import Bookmarks from HTML.
  • Safari (Mac): File → Import From → Bookmarks HTML File.

Desktop browsers can also import directly from another browser installed on the same computer, without a file.

From a PC browser to a different browser on your phone

Mobile browsers can't open bookmark files, so moving from, say, Chrome on Windows to Safari on iPhone takes one extra step:

  • Through a desktop browser that syncs: import the HTML file into the desktop version of the browser you use on your phone (for example Safari on a Mac, or Firefox on your PC) and let its sync carry the bookmarks to the phone.
  • Use the same browser everywhere: install Chrome, Edge or Firefox on your phone too and sync with the same account.
  • Use a browser-independent list: keep your favorites in a web service that every browser can open, as described next.

Keep one list for every browser with WebDeck

WebDeck stores your bookmarks and favorite sites in your account instead of in one browser, so the same list opens in Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox or any other browser, on PC and phone alike.

  1. Export your bookmarks as an HTML file from your current browser.
  2. Sign in to WebDeck on your PC and choose Settings → Import browser bookmarks. Your folders are kept.
  3. On your phone, open webdeck.me in any browser and sign in with the same account. Your bookmark bar and shortcuts are already there, and changes on one device show up on the others.

You can also download a backup of your shortcuts, groups and settings anytime from Settings → Backup. To make WebDeck the first thing you see, follow how to change your start page.

Common problems

  • Bookmarks don't appear on the phone: make sure both devices are signed in to the same account, bookmark sync is on, and wait a few minutes. Pulling down to refresh the bookmark list or restarting the app can help.
  • Everything shows up twice: importing the same file twice, or importing while sync is already on, creates duplicates. Follow the cleanup steps in how to organize your bookmarks.
  • Can't find the imported bookmarks: look for a new folder such as “Imported” or “Imported from…” in the bookmarks bar or bookmark manager.
